  • X (2008) finds Kylie Minogue in excellent form. After the commercial and critical success of 2004's BODY LANGUAGE and a harrowing battle with cancer, the Australian pop diva seemed poised to bounce back onto the scene with a new energy, and that's precisely what she did. X doesn't signal a radical change in direction, however. Instead, it plays like an expression of her greatest strength, namely making immediately hooky dance-pop that draws effortlessly on `80s mainstream pop, hard-driving club music, and contemporary R&B.
  • One of the impressive things about X is how diverse it is. There are glam-rock grinders (opener "2 Hearts"), classic-sounding Madonna-esque gems ("Wow"), intimate R&B groovers ("All I See"), tense electro-pop ("Like a Drug"), and breathy, atmospheric jams ("Sensitized"). All of this comes off sounding remarkably unified and consistent, making X a satisfying listen from front to back. Minogue isn't out to reinvent the wheel, and has never claimed she is-but X is pure pop pleasure, and as such succeeds beautifully
Professional Reviews
Rolling Stone (p.60) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "X compiles wall-to-wall club thumpers....'Wow' opens with perky house-reminiscent keyboard chords that nod to her big hits of twenty years ago..."

Record Collector (magazine) (p.88) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'2 Hearts' is an impressive start: perfectly polished pop paying more than a little homage to the 80s and sounding better with every listen."
